Can of Berger’s Pure Paris Green. Emma bought some of this in Wentzville. Public domain.
Aloys’s brother Alphonse related that “the woman” (Emma) inquired about his brother’s insurance. She also asked Alphonse to board with her, which he did until she started to serve her famous potato soup. He added, speaking toward the jury, “She threatened to kill me three times but I thought she was only kidding. I sure am glad now I didn’t eat the soup.” This caused snickering from the gallery.
Emma told her sister-in-law Lucy that she did not know what was wrong with Aloys but that the Friday before his death a doctor from St. Charles prescribed strychnine for the heart ailment that he purportedly had. At the inquest, however, the doctor showed the formula that he had prescribed and, surprise, no strychnine.
A different unnamed doctor from St. Charles testified that he had been called to the Schneider home by Aloys’s sons, where he found Aloys to be dying. The doctor ordered Aloys to the hospital, where he died shortly after.
Local people still remember Aloys Schneider’s exhumation at the All Saints Catholic Church Cemetery in St. Peters, Missouri. Some tell of looking out the school windows watching authorities dig in the cemetery, not quite understanding what was going on until their parents discussed the exhumation. Others remember hearing about it at the small businesses along Main Street in St. Peters. At any rate, Aloys’s body was found to contain high levels of arsenic. He had been murdered.
At the time of Aloys’s death, Emma was awarded a $600 and a $70 insurance payment. This was all that was left after she covered the funeral expenses. She also said she was due the $5,500 in his estate, which was the same amount each child was receiving. It is unclear if that happened or not. But she moved on to husband number seven with great speed. Obviously, she did not make the profit she had hoped. Now, what is a girl to do?
